| Bio: | ![]() Michael Anthony Nelson was born February 18, 1889 to an unknown teenage mother in Cicero General Hospital, Cicero, Illinois, who disappeared immediately afterward, never to be heard from again. The abandoned infant was taken to the local orphanage, run by the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, where he was given his name. It was all that he had. Michael was an agreeable, friendly child, whom everybody loved, and he never seemed to mind that he had no parents, embracing the priests as fathers, and the nuns as surrogate mothers. He seemed to thrive in their care. They sent him to school, and although he was not a stellar student, he got by. What he lacked in booklearning, he more than made up for in natural street smarts, though, as well as having a charming personality. When he was twelve, he fell under the influence of a gang of boys, whose parents were members of Big Jim Colosimo's gang, and he became fascinated by their way of life, and decided the orphanage was not a big enough world for him. He ran away from there at the age of thirteen, and boldly made his way to Big Jim's home, offering his services and his fealty. The big friendly Italian took a liking to Michael and took him in, giving him to his capos to train, and he quickly caught on to many of the tricks of the trade - not limited to number running, extortion and loansharking. He became adept with a number of various weapons - he was quick with his hands, as well as his mouth. And he lured many a young girl into his bed, having been introduced by one of the gangmember's sisters when he was fourteen. Big Jim had been threatened for some time by Black Hand extortionists and, in 1909, his wife summoned her nephew Johnny Torrio from New York to protect her husband (the wife being at that time rather a successful madame in Chicago). He left behind his trusted henchman Frankie Yale to see to Big Apple operations in his absence. Torrio managed Colosimo's Cafe for his uncle, which is where he met Michael, and they became instant friends. So much so that when Torrio opened up his own saloon, gambling den and whorehouse, The Four Deuces, in 1919, Michael went with him. Located at 2222 South Wabash, it was just up the street from Colosimo's Cafe. Just the year before, Frankie Yale had sent Alphonse Capone to Cicero, as he was on the lam from the law, and he joined Torrio's gang as well. With the advent of Prohibition in 1920, bootlegging became the name of the game, and the gangs went wild, profiting greatly from that as well as gambling and prostitution. Torrio, with Capone's help, took control of the Loop and most of the South Side of Chicago, while the North Side was under the leadership of Dion O'Banion. But when O'Banion double-crossed Torrio, he got revenge. November 10, 1924, he was gunned down in his flower shop by Yale, John Scalise and Albert Anselmi. O'Banion's friends swore revenge, and struck back a few months later at Torrio - Hymie Weiss, Vincent Drucci, and George "Bugs" Moran. Torrio barely managed to survive. A year later, he was sent to prison for Prohibition violations and Capone was in charge of the mob. Michael thrived under the leadership of Capone, becoming a trusted capio in his own right. And when the time came for revenge on those who had hurt Torrio, it was natural that he wanted to be there. February 14, 1929 - The scene was the garage of the S-M-C Cartage Company in the Lincoln Park neighbourhood of the North Side. Six members of Moran's gang were lined up against the wall and gunned down execution style by five members of Capone's gang, two of whom were dressed as policemen - one of whom was Michael Nelson. Capone was conveniently in Florida at the time. In fact, he was inside a police station at the very time of the massacre. Unfortunately, Moran was not there at the time, much to Capone's chagrin. And he too swore revenge. A jubilant Michael took a bottle of hooch and a cheap hooker, and borrowing one of the boss' cars, he took her for a little spin which ended up in the backseat of the car, and well, you can imagine what was going on there. While he was thus engaged, with his guard down, Michael never noticed the approach of the rival gang leader, who pulled open the car door, giving the hooker time to get away. Michael had seen Moran before, but tonight he noticed something about him he'd never noticed before - when the other man bit him in the neck was when he discovered that he was actually a vampire. Michael's initial reaction? "Fuck me!" Which, of course, had proven to be his undoing, as the hooker had actually been a well-laid plant. Pun intended. After being turned, Michael decided to leave Chicago, as his life suddenly and drastically changed - although, technically, it was now an unlife as he was now among the undead, bidding a fond farewell to Al Capone, who was soon to be sent to Alcatraz for tax evasion. Using his mob connections, he travelled about the country, lending his services to those in need, who were willing to pay. Not trusting banks, he kept the cash he made with him, and was therefore unaffected when, on October 29, 1929, the world went into a major tailspin known as the Great Depression. Within a few years, Prohibition was repealed, FDR was the man of the hour, and Michael decided to go into a different line of work. He found himself in Hollywood where his handsome face got him work on a number of films that were in production, among them Gone With The Wind, and Casablanca. But it wasn't until he attended a performance of MacBeth - traditionally known as the Scottish Play - that he was bitten, this time by the theatre bug. He decided that the stage was for him, and he joined a troupe of actors, where it became obvious that he was a natural, and he did very well. The trouble was that after a few years he had to move on, because he never aged, and people began to look suspiciously at him. He moved from troupe to troupe in this way, sometime changing his name when the mood struck him. He travelled across the pond in the late 1930's, while the situation in Europe was going from bad to worse - blissfully ignorant of politics was Michael - and he managed to be in England during the Blitzkrieg, a fascinating time, and yet strangely exhilarating. It was then that he met the flambuoyant showman Derek Deville, who recognized a kindred spirit in him and invited him to join the Venetian Baubles. Once the war ended, the theatre experienced a revival which proved advantageous to Derek et all, and Michael has been with them ever since. | ||||||||||
